How to Pair an Echo with a Bluetooth Speaker or Headphones

Smart home troubleshooting category image

An Echo can use Bluetooth in two directions. It can send its audio to a bigger speaker or headphones, or it can receive audio from your phone and play it through the Echo speaker.

These steps apply to Amazon Echo devices with Bluetooth, paired through the Alexa app or voice commands.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you want better sound from an external Bluetooth speaker, private listening through headphones, or a quick way to play phone audio through an Echo.

Send Echo audio to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones

  1. Put the Bluetooth speaker or headphones into pairing mode.
  2. Keep the device close to the Echo for the first connection.
  3. Say Alexa, pair or Alexa, connect to Bluetooth.
  4. If Alexa asks which device to use, choose the speaker or headphones.
  5. If voice pairing does not finish, open the Alexa app.
  6. Go to Devices > Echo & Alexa.
  7. Select the Echo.
  8. Open Bluetooth Devices.
  9. Tap the speaker or headphones to connect.

After connection, music, Alexa responses, alarms, and other audio from that Echo play through the Bluetooth device. To switch back, say Alexa, disconnect Bluetooth, or disconnect from the Alexa app.

Stream phone audio through the Echo

Use this reverse direction for podcast apps, games, or audio apps Alexa does not support directly.

  1. Say Alexa, pair.
  2. Open Bluetooth settings on your phone.
  3. Select the Echo from available devices.
  4. Wait for the phone to show Connected.
  5. Start playback in the app you want to hear.
  6. Disconnect from phone Bluetooth settings or say Alexa, disconnect when finished.

While phone audio is streaming, Alexa can still listen for the wake word and pause audio to respond.

Fix pairing problems

  • Move the Bluetooth device within a few feet of the Echo.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and back on for the speaker, headphones, or phone.
  • Make sure the Bluetooth device is not already connected to another phone or computer.
  • In the Alexa app, open Bluetooth Devices and choose Forget Device for old pairings you no longer use.
  • Reconnect manually if the Echo remembers several devices but chooses the wrong one.

An Echo can remember multiple Bluetooth devices, but it only actively connects to one audio device at a time. Even when audio is routed outside the Echo, the Echo’s own microphones remain active for Alexa commands.
