Most Wi-Fi smart plugs do not pair directly with Google Home first. They need to be set up in the manufacturer’s app, then linked to Google Home as a connected service.
These steps apply to Kasa, Wyze, Wemo, and similar smart plugs controlled from the Google Home app on iPhone or Android.
Does this affect you?
Use this if a smart plug is not showing in Google Home or if you want voice control from a Nest speaker or display. The plug’s own app is usually a required setup step, not the final destination.
Set up the plug in its own app first
- Plug the smart plug into a wall outlet.
- Download the manufacturer’s app named on the box or manual.
- Create an account or sign in.
- Follow the app’s setup flow to connect the plug to your home Wi-Fi.
- If pairing uses Bluetooth first, keep your phone nearby.
- Confirm the plug turns on and off from the manufacturer’s app.
Do not move to Google Home until the plug works in its native app. That proves the plug, Wi-Fi password, and account are working.
Link the plug to Google Home
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap the + icon.
- Tap Set up device.
- Choose Works with Google.
- Search for the plug brand, such as TP-Link Kasa or Wemo.
- Sign in with the same account used in the manufacturer’s app.
- Select the devices Google finds.
- Assign the plug to the correct room.
- Tap Done.
After linking, the plug should appear in Google Home and respond to commands such as Hey Google, turn on the lamp.
Matter plugs and troubleshooting
If the plug box shows a Matter logo, you may be able to add it directly. In Google Home, tap + > Set up device > New device and scan the Matter setup code.
Rename the plug to something you will naturally say out loud. Lamp, Desk Light, or Coffee Maker is easier than Smart Plug 1.
If linking fails, make sure you used the exact same account in both apps. A common mistake is accidentally creating a second manufacturer account during Google linking. You can unlink the service under Google Home Settings > Works with Google, then link it again.
For several plugs that do similar work, group them in Google Home so one command can control all of them. Also keep them assigned to rooms, because room names make Assistant commands much more reliable.
