An Echo that ignores Alexa commands is usually muted, offline, stuck, too quiet to hear, or listening for a different wake word. The light ring gives the first clue.
These steps apply to Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, Echo Studio, Echo Flex, and other current Alexa devices.
Does this affect you?
Use this if saying Alexa produces no light, no reply, and no action from timers, music, or smart home commands.
Check the mic and give it a real restart
Start here because it fixes the most common causes.
- Look for the microphone off button on the Echo.
- If the light ring is solid red, press the mic button to unmute.
- Unplug the Echo from power.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in.
- Wait for the blue light to finish and settle off.
- Test with a simple command such as Alexa, what time is it?
If the ring spins or turns orange and never settles, the device may be stuck trying to connect to Wi-Fi.
Fix a dropped Wi-Fi connection
An offline Echo can look like it is ignoring you.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap Devices > Echo & Alexa.
- Select the affected device and check whether it says Offline.
- Restart the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds.
- Wait 2 to 3 minutes for the router to reconnect.
- Move the Echo closer to the router if signal is weak.
- In the device settings, choose Update Wi-Fi and reconnect from scratch.
Echo devices need a steady connection because most requests are processed through Alexa services.
Fix a wake word that isn’t being heard
If the mic and Wi-Fi are fine, check listening and volume settings.
- Raise the volume or say Alexa, volume 5.
- Open the device settings in the Alexa app.
- Check Wake Word and confirm it is the word you expect.
- Pause briefly after the wake word before giving the command.
- Move the Echo away from TVs, fans, speakers, or other noise.
Check the device card for a warning banner or exclamation icon. Amazon may show a specific issue such as firmware, account, or hardware trouble.
Leave the Echo plugged in overnight if an update may be stuck. If nothing works, factory reset only as a final step because it wipes device settings. If the light ring never lights at all, test another outlet or power cable before assuming the Echo failed.
