What Is Input Lag? Why Your Game Feels Delayed

Input lag is the delay between your button press or mouse movement and the action appearing on screen. It is local to your controller, system, game engine, and display, not your internet connection.

These concepts apply to PC and console gaming with controllers, mouse and keyboard, monitors, and TVs.

Where input lag comes from

Input lag is several small delays stacked together.

  • The input device adds delay. Wireless controllers and mice may add a little more than wired devices.
  • The game engine and frame rate add delay because inputs are processed between rendered frames.
  • At 30 FPS, the time between frames can be roughly 33 milliseconds. At 144 FPS, it is under 7 milliseconds.
  • The display adds processing delay before showing the image.
  • TV Game Mode or PC Mode reduces extra picture processing that adds lag.
  • Total input lag is the device delay plus game processing plus display processing.

This is why a game can feel delayed offline. None of these steps require an internet server.

How to actually reduce it

Start with the easy changes that usually matter most.

  1. Turn on Game Mode on your TV or monitor.
  2. Use a wired controller, mouse, or keyboard for competitive play when practical.
  3. Raise FPS by lowering graphics settings, using upscaling, or upgrading hardware.
  4. Turn off traditional V-Sync if input delay is more important than tearing.
  5. Use NVIDIA Reflex, AMD Anti-Lag, or a low-latency mode when supported.
  6. Cap frame rate slightly below your monitor refresh rate if that produces smoother frame pacing.
  7. Check independent display input-lag tests before buying a gaming monitor or TV.

Game Mode on a TV is often the biggest free improvement because it removes motion smoothing and other image processing.

Input lag, response time, and ping

Monitor response time measures how quickly pixels change color, which affects blur and ghosting. Display input lag measures how long the display waits before it begins showing the new frame.

Ping is different again. Ping measures network round-trip time to an online server. Input lag affects every game, online or offline, and is local to your setup.

NVIDIA Reflex and AMD Anti-Lag reduce how many frames the game queues before display, which can lower latency without changing visual quality in supported games.
