Twitch video and Twitch chat load through separate connections. That is why a stream can play normally while chat is blank, frozen, or stuck spinning.
These steps apply to Twitch in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, and the Twitch mobile app.

Use this if Twitch chat does not appear, shows old messages, spins forever, or stops updating while the stream keeps playing.
Refresh and clear the browser cache
A stuck cached script or page file is the quickest fix to try.
- On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + R on the Twitch page.
- On Mac, press Cmd + Shift + R.
- If chat still fails, clear cached images and files for your browser.
- In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data.
- Choose Cached images and files and a time range of at least Last 7 days.
- Close and reopen the browser.
- Return to twitch.tv and sign in again if needed.
A hard refresh forces Twitch to reload page scripts instead of relying on the local cache.
Disable browser extensions
Ad blockers, tracker blockers, and Twitch chat tools are the most common reason video works but chat does not.
- Open chrome://extensions in Chrome or about:addons in Firefox.
- Disable ad blockers, privacy extensions, and Twitch-specific add-ons one at a time.
- Reload Twitch after each change.
- When chat starts working, whitelist twitch.tv in the extension or leave that extension off for Twitch.
Chat scripts can look like tracking or ad traffic to filter lists, so a blocker can stop chat while the video player remains fine.
Try a different browser or the app
This separates a browser setup problem from a wider Twitch problem.
- Open the same stream in a different browser.
- Try a private or incognito window, which usually starts without extensions.
- On mobile, test the Twitch app instead of a mobile browser.
- If chat fails everywhere, check status.twitch.tv for a chat service disruption.
If chat works in a clean browser, return to the main browser and focus on extensions, cache, and site data.
Connection, VPN, and busy chat notes
Intermittent chat freezes can come from weak Wi-Fi even when video keeps buffering ahead. Test closer to the router or use wired Ethernet on desktop.
Disable VPN temporarily. Some VPN exit nodes are rate-limited or blocked by Twitch chat servers.
Try default DNS or a public DNS such as 8.8.8.8 if only Twitch chat fails. On very busy streams, BetterTTV or FrankerFaceZ can add extra rendering work, so disable them while testing.
