Nintendo Switch game cards are small, and their gold contacts are exposed. Dust, fingerprints, incomplete insertion, or card-slot damage can stop the console from reading a physical game.
These steps apply to Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED.

Use this if the Switch says to insert a game card even though one is inserted, or if a cartridge is not recognized at all.
Clean the card and check it’s seated correctly
Most game-card read problems come from dirty contacts or the card not being fully inserted.
- Remove the game card.
- Inspect the gold contacts on the back for dust, smudges, fingerprints, scratches, or corrosion.
- Wipe the contacts gently with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
- Do not use water or cleaning liquid as a first step.
- Reinsert the card firmly until it clicks.
- Use a flashlight to look for visible debris at the card slot opening.
- Do not insert cotton swabs, compressed-air straws, or metal tools into the slot.
- Restart the console from Power Options > Restart and test again.
A card that works after cleaning had a contact problem, not a console failure.
Test whether it’s the card or the console
Use another card and another console if possible to isolate the failed part.
- Try a different game card in the same Switch.
- If the second card works, the first card is likely damaged or dirty.
- Try the suspect card in another Switch.
- If it works elsewhere, your console’s card slot may be the issue.
- Inspect the card for cracks, warped plastic, or damaged contacts.
- If no card reads on your console but digital games work, suspect the internal card reader.
A card that fails in every console is the card. A console that fails with every card is the console.
Updates, cleaning warnings, and repair
Install any pending system update from System Settings > System > System Update, especially if the problem happens with a newer physical game.
If the card is only dirty, a dry cloth is safest. A cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol can be used carefully, but let the contacts dry fully before reinserting.
Never lick a Switch game card. Nintendo coats cards with a bitter substance, and moisture can cause contact read errors.
If the card’s plastic is cracked or contacts are scratched or corroded, there is rarely a reliable home repair. Save data is separate from the card, stored on the console or in cloud backup when available.
A failed card slot is not a user-serviceable part. Contact Nintendo Support for warranty or paid repair.
