
Game stuttering is not the same as simply having low FPS. A game can show a decent average frame rate and still feel uneven because individual frames arrive late, causing brief freezes or hitches.
These steps apply to Windows PCs running games through Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Xbox app, or other launchers.

Use this if a game pauses for a split second, hitches while loading new areas, or feels choppy even when the FPS counter looks acceptable.
Update your graphics driver
A current GPU driver fixes more game stutter problems than almost any other single step.
- Right-click the desktop and open Display settings, then Advanced display, or open Device Manager > Display adapters to identify your graphics card.
- For NVIDIA cards, open the NVIDIA app or GeForce Experience and check the Drivers tab.
- For AMD cards, open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and check for updates on the Home screen.
- Install the newest driver available for your card.
- Restart the PC even if the installer does not ask.
Windows Update can install a basic driver, but gaming fixes usually arrive first through NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel’s own driver packages.
Close background programs competing for resources
Background software can interrupt frame delivery by using CPU, memory, disk, or GPU time while the game is running.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Open the Processes tab.
- Sort by CPU, Memory, or Disk.
- Close heavy apps you do not need while playing, especially browsers with many tabs.
- Turn off unnecessary overlays, RGB control effects, recording tools, and cloud sync during gameplay.
- Open Settings > Gaming > Game Mode and make sure Game Mode is turned on.
Game Mode helps Windows prioritize the game over background tasks, but it works best when you also close software that is actively consuming resources.
Check your PC isn’t overheating
Heat can make a CPU or GPU reduce its clock speed for protection. That sudden throttling feels exactly like a stutter.
- Use a monitoring tool such as HWMonitor, NVIDIA app graphs, or AMD Adrenalin metrics.
- Play the game that stutters and watch CPU and GPU temperatures.
- If either part repeatedly climbs above roughly 85 degrees C, check cooling.
- Make sure fans are spinning and vents are not blocked by dust.
- Give the case room for airflow.
- On laptops, play on a hard, flat surface instead of bedding or a couch.
Stutter that gets worse the longer you play often points toward heat or a background process building up over time.
Shader compilation, storage, and sync settings
Some games briefly freeze the first time they render a new effect because they are compiling shaders. This is common right after a game update and often improves after you play for a while.
If a game is installed on a traditional hard drive, stutters can happen when it loads new textures or areas. Moving the game to an SSD is one of the most noticeable upgrades for open-world and modern games.
V-Sync can smooth tearing but may introduce uneven frame pacing on some setups. Test with V-Sync off, and use G-Sync or FreeSync if your monitor and graphics card support it.
