Nintendo Switch Online can fail because Nintendo’s service is down, your console connection is unstable, or the console is not seeing the correct membership. The fastest fix is to separate those possibilities before changing many settings.
These steps apply to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 consoles using Nintendo Switch Online or the Expansion Pack membership.

Use this if online multiplayer will not connect, cloud saves do not sync, classic NES, SNES, or N64 apps will not open, or the console acts as if your subscription is inactive.
Check Nintendo’s network service status
Start here because an outage cannot be fixed from your console.
- Open Nintendo’s official Network Service Status page on a phone or computer.
- Look for Nintendo Switch Online and the specific game or service you are trying to use.
- If Nintendo reports an outage or maintenance, wait and try again later.
- If everything is listed as available, continue with your console and network checks.
Nintendo sometimes lists problems for individual services or games, so check more than one line on the status page before assuming your network is at fault.
Test and reset your console’s connection
Once Nintendo’s service looks normal, the problem is usually local to your internet connection, Wi-Fi, router, or console.
- On the Switch, open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection.
- Write down where the test fails and what NAT type it reports.
- Restart your router by unplugging it for a full minute, then plug it back in and let it reconnect.
- Restart the Switch from Power Options > Restart.
- If possible, test with a wired LAN adapter instead of Wi-Fi.
- Run Test Connection again after the router and console restart.
Wired Ethernet is useful as a test even if you normally play on Wi-Fi. If wired works and Wi-Fi does not, interference or weak signal is probably the cause.
Fix subscription-specific errors
Use these checks when the internet test passes but the membership, cloud save, or classic game feature still refuses to work.
- Open System Settings > Users > your profile > Nintendo Account, or sign in on Nintendo’s website.
- Check Membership and Subscriptions for an active Nintendo Switch Online plan.
- If the membership expired or payment failed, update the payment method and confirm renewal.
- For classic game apps or cloud saves, sign out of the Nintendo Account on the console and sign back in to refresh entitlement data.
- If you upgraded to Expansion Pack recently, confirm the upgrade on Nintendo’s website, wait a little, and restart the console.
Membership benefits belong to a Nintendo Account. If only one profile on a shared console has trouble, make sure that profile is linked to the account with the active subscription or to a family group that shares one.
DNS and NAT issues
If the console can browse online but multiplayer cannot connect to other players, check the NAT result in the connection test. Strict NAT can require router changes such as UPnP or port forwarding.
If everything else on the internet works but Nintendo services fail, try changing the console DNS under Internet Settings > your network > Change Settings > DNS Settings. A public DNS server such as 8.8.8.8 can help when an ISP DNS server has trouble resolving Nintendo servers.
