Battle.net depends on background helper processes. When Battle.net.exe or Agent.exe gets stuck after an update or crash, double-clicking the shortcut may appear to do nothing even though pieces of the app are still running.
These steps apply to the Battle.net desktop app on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
Does this affect you?
Use this if Battle.net will not open, flashes for a second and closes, hangs before login, or never shows a window.
Restart Battle.net background processes
- Right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager, or press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Open the Details tab, or Processes if your Task Manager uses the simple view.
- Find Battle.net.exe and Agent.exe.
- Select each one and click End Task.
- End every duplicate entry with those names.
- Wait about 10 seconds.
- Open Battle.net again from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.
If Task Manager does not clear it, restart the PC fully and try again.
Repair or reinstall Battle.net
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Battle.net.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart the PC after uninstalling.
- Download a fresh installer from Blizzard’s official Battle.net page.
- Install it and sign in again.
Your installed games usually do not need to be downloaded again. Battle.net can detect them if they are still in their original folders.
Check firewall and antivirus blocks
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall.
- Click Change settings.
- Find Battle.net.exe and Agent.exe.
- Allow both on Private and Public networks.
- If either is missing, use Allow another app and browse to the Battle.net install folder.
- Check third-party antivirus exceptions if you use one.
Security software can block the helper process and make the launcher look broken.
Cache, permissions, and Windows updates
If reinstalling is not enough, close Battle.net completely and delete the contents of the Battle.net folder inside %ProgramData%. That forces the app cache to rebuild and does not delete your account or installed games.
Right-click the shortcut and choose Run as administrator. If it opens only that way, folder permissions on the install directory may need attention.
Run Windows Update and install pending Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable updates if offered, because Battle.net may need current Windows components to launch properly.
