Baldur’s Gate 3 Crashing? How to Fix It

Baldur’s Gate 3 can crash because it is demanding on GPU drivers, save integrity, and mods. Long campaigns, large save files, and major game patches make these issues more likely.

These steps apply mainly to Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC through Steam and GOG. Console players have fewer settings but can still update, restart, and test saves.

Does this affect you?

Use this if BG3 crashes to desktop, crashes while saving or loading, fails during one scene, or never gets past the launcher.

Update drivers and verify game files

  1. Install the newest GPU driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
  2. In Steam, right-click Baldur’s Gate 3, open Properties > Local Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files.
  3. In GOG Galaxy, use the Verify or Repair option.
  4. Switch rendering API. If Vulkan crashes, try DirectX 11. If DX11 crashes, test Vulkan.
  5. Lower Dynamic Resolution and very high Shadow Quality if crashes continue.
  6. Close overlays such as Discord, MSI Afterburner, RGB utilities, and capture tools.
  7. Restart the PC and test again.

File verification replaces damaged game files without touching your saves.

Check saves and loading crashes

If the crash happens only when loading a specific save, try an earlier autosave or manual save from before the issue started. Very large or heavily modified late-campaign saves can be more fragile.

If an older save works, avoid repeatedly loading the broken one until after drivers, game files, and mods have been checked.

Disable mods completely

  1. Turn off all mods through BG3 Mod Manager or move mod files out of the mods folder.
  2. Launch the game without mods and test the same area or save.
  3. If the crash stops, update every mod for the current BG3 patch.
  4. Re-enable mods one at a time or in small groups.
  5. Test after each group until the crash returns.
  6. Pay extra attention to class overhauls, UI replacements, and large content mods.

A mod that worked yesterday can break after a Baldur’s Gate 3 update. If the game runs with mods off, focus on mod compatibility instead of reinstalling the whole game.
