A green or purple cast across the picture usually looks worse than it is. In most cases, the cause is a loose HDMI connection, a failing cable, a shifted color setting, or a source device using a color format the TV does not like.
These steps apply to Samsung, LG, Vizio, TCL, Sony, Hisense, and other smart TVs connected through HDMI, cable boxes, streaming devices, consoles, or antenna.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the whole screen suddenly looks green, purple, magenta, or oddly tinted, especially if the TV looked normal before.
Check the HDMI cable and connection first
- Unplug the HDMI cable from the TV.
- Unplug the other end from the cable box, streaming device, console, or receiver.
- Reconnect both ends firmly.
- Try a different HDMI cable if one is available.
- Move the device to another HDMI port on the TV.
- Test whether the tint appears only on that one source or on every input.
If the tint disappears on another cable or port, the original cable or port is the issue. Long, bent, or inexpensive HDMI cables are common causes of color errors.
Reset picture and color settings
- Press Menu or Settings on the remote.
- Open Picture settings.
- Set Color Tone or White Balance back to Normal, Standard, or Warm 2 depending on your TV.
- Check Tint and Color sliders and return them to the center or default position.
- Use Reset Picture Settings or Picture Reset if your TV offers it.
This fixes accidental picture changes, odd demo modes, and picture presets that push the color balance too far.
Check the source device’s color output
Streaming devices, consoles, and cable boxes may have their own display settings. Look for color format options such as RGB, YCbCr, HDR, Dolby Vision, or deep color.
Try switching between RGB and YCbCr, or temporarily turning HDR or Dolby Vision off. If the tint clears, the TV and source were not agreeing on the color format.
When it points to hardware
Open the TV’s built-in menu or a built-in smart TV app. If menus and built-in apps look normal, the TV panel is probably fine and the problem is the external device, HDMI port, or cable.
If the green or purple tint appears on every input, every app, and the TV’s own menus after a picture reset, it may be a panel, backlight, or internal board issue. If the TV is under warranty, contact the manufacturer before paying for repair.
