A TV with sound but no picture is a different problem from a TV that will not turn on. Audio means the set or source device is alive, while the missing image usually points to HDMI, input selection, backlight, picture settings, source output, or display hardware.
These steps apply to LED, LCD, OLED, and QLED TVs from any brand, including TVs connected to cable boxes, streaming devices, consoles, or computers.

Use this if the TV turns on, you can hear a show or menu sounds, but the screen is black, shows no signal, or only displays a faint image.
Check the HDMI cable and input
- Press Source or Input on the remote.
- Choose the HDMI port where the cable box, streaming device, or console is actually connected.
- Unplug the HDMI cable from both the TV and the source device.
- Reconnect both ends firmly.
- Try another HDMI cable if you have one.
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
Video needs far more bandwidth than audio, so a loose or damaged HDMI cable can sometimes pass sound while the picture drops out.
Check backlight and picture settings
On LED and LCD TVs, the image can exist but be too dark to see if the backlight is off or failing.
- Turn the TV on and play something with sound.
- In a dark room, shine a flashlight close to the screen from an angle.
- Look for faint shapes, colors, menus, or movement.
- If you can see a dim image, open Settings > Picture and raise Backlight or Brightness.
- Switch Picture Mode back to Standard if a recent mode change or firmware update made the image too dark.
- If a dim image remains but brightness settings do nothing, the backlight hardware likely needs repair.
The flashlight test is important because it separates a hidden image from a completely missing video signal.
Power-cycle the TV and source device
- Turn off the TV and the connected device.
- Unplug both from power.
- Wait a full 60 seconds.
- Plug in the source device first and let it fully boot.
- Plug in and turn on the TV.
- Select the correct input again.
This clears HDMI handshake failures where the source sends a signal format the TV temporarily fails to accept.
Narrow down what failed
Connect another device, such as a laptop, console, or spare streaming box, to see whether the issue follows the source device or stays with the TV.
Inspect the screen with a flashlight at an angle. Spiderweb cracks, spreading dark patches, or impact marks point to physical panel damage that settings cannot repair.
If no input shows picture, the flashlight test shows nothing behind the screen, and the TV still has sound, the backlight array, main board, or panel electronics may have failed. On TVs older than five or six years, replacement can be more cost-effective than a major repair.
