If a Sony Bravia TV plays sound but the screen stays black or extremely dark, the TV is not completely dead. The problem is usually picture output, a dimmed backlight, a frozen video process, HDMI handshake trouble, or a hardware backlight fault.
These steps apply to Sony Bravia TVs running Google TV or Android TV, including LED, OLED, and Mini LED models.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you hear a show, menu sounds, volume beeps, or the Google TV home screen audio while the screen remains black, dark, or only barely visible.
Check and reset the backlight setting
A backlight set near zero, or an ambient sensor dimming the screen too far, can make the TV look like it has no picture even though the panel is still producing an image.
- With the TV on and audio playing, press Home on the remote.
- Go to Settings > Display & Sound > Picture.
- Find Backlight or Brightness and raise it to at least 50 if it is very low.
- Temporarily turn off Light Sensor, Ambient Optimization, or Eco picture settings.
- If you can navigate menus but the picture area is black, shine a flashlight close to the screen from an angle and look for a faint image.
If the flashlight reveals a dim picture, the LCD image is present but the backlight is not illuminating it. That usually points to the backlight system rather than a failed panel.
Power-cycle the Sony TV
- Turn the TV off with the remote.
- Unplug it from the wall completely.
- Wait a full 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on with the physical TV power button if possible.
- Let Google TV sit on the home screen for about a minute before opening an app.
This can recover a frozen video pipeline where audio continues but the screen output stops rendering after an update or app crash.
Check the HDMI input and cable
If the black screen happens only with a cable box, console, receiver, or streaming device, test the HDMI path before blaming the TV.
- Switch to Sony’s built-in Google TV home screen or a built-in app.
- If built-in apps show picture, unplug the HDMI cable from both ends and reconnect it firmly.
- Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
- Swap in another HDMI cable, especially for 4K or HDR devices.
- Unplug the connected device for 30 seconds, then restart it.
A failing cable or stuck HDMI handshake can carry audio while video fails, especially with higher-resolution sources.
When it is likely hardware or app-specific
If one app is black but menus and other apps work, uninstall and reinstall that app. If one HDMI input is black but built-in apps work, the connected device or cable is more likely than the TV.
If every source is black, the flashlight test shows a faint image, and backlight settings do not change the brightness, one or more backlight zones may have failed. If there is no faint image at all and sound remains normal, an internal board or ribbon issue may need professional service.
