A Samsung TV black screen with sound is different from a TV that will not turn on. If you hear audio, startup chimes, or menu sounds, part of the TV is working, and the problem is usually backlight, source, HDMI, panel, or software.
These steps apply to Samsung Smart TVs running Tizen, including Crystal UHD, QLED, and Neo QLED models.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the TV powers on but the screen stays black, especially when sound or remote response still works.
Do the flashlight test
- Turn the TV on and wait a few seconds.
- Shine a phone flashlight directly at the screen from about an inch away.
- Angle the light slightly and look closely for a faint image, menu, or app icon.
- If you can see a dim picture, the backlight has likely failed.
- If there is no image at all, continue with source and HDMI checks.
A failed backlight is not a menu setting. The LED strips or backlight system need repair. If the TV is under warranty, contact Samsung. On older TVs, compare repair cost with replacement.
Rule out source, input, and cables
- Press Source or Input and choose the correct HDMI input.
- Unplug the HDMI cable from both ends and reconnect it firmly.
- Try a different HDMI port.
- Avoid the eARC port temporarily if testing a normal video device.
- Try a different HDMI cable.
- Restart the TV by unplugging it from the wall for 60 seconds.
If another input or cable works, the TV display is probably fine. The issue was source selection, cable seating, or a bad HDMI port.
Run Samsung Picture Test
If you can see menus or access settings, go to Settings > Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test. This test pattern bypasses connected HDMI devices.
If the picture test fails too, the fault is inside the TV. If the picture test works, focus on the connected device, cable, or input.
Check software before repair
Press Home. If Smart Hub appears normally but one app is black, the app or Smart Hub may be frozen. Restart the TV or reset Smart Hub if it keeps happening. A full factory reset from Settings > General > Reset is a later step because it erases settings.
If the TV has sound with no video on every source, no picture test, and no flashlight-test image, the video processing board or panel may need service. Backlight repair is often worthwhile on newer higher-end models; older TVs can approach replacement cost.
