Losing the Apple TV Siri Remote is frustrating, but it usually does not stop you from using the Apple TV. Every recent iPhone includes an Apple TV Remote in Control Center that can navigate, type, and use Siri.
These steps apply to Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K models, regardless of which Siri Remote generation came in the box.

Use this if the Siri Remote is lost, broken, or unavailable and you need a temporary or permanent way to control Apple TV.
Use your iPhone as the remote
- Open Control Center on the iPhone.
- Tap the Apple TV Remote icon.
- If the icon is missing, go to Settings > Control Center and add Apple TV Remote.
- Choose your Apple TV from the list.
- Use the touch area, buttons, keyboard, and microphone controls from the phone.
This works best when the iPhone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Apple TV. The iPhone remote also gives you a real keyboard when text entry is needed.
Buy a replacement Siri Remote
Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K can use current Siri Remote models. You usually do not need to match the exact remote generation that originally shipped with the Apple TV.
- Confirm you have Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K.
- Buy a current Siri Remote from Apple or an authorized retailer, or choose a compatible third-party remote.
- Hold the new remote near the Apple TV.
- If it does not pair automatically, use Settings > Remotes and Devices to pair it manually.
Official remotes preserve Siri and the clickpad or touch controls. Cheaper third-party remotes may handle basic navigation and volume but often skip Siri or swipe features.
Use a TV remote through HDMI-CEC
If HDMI-CEC is enabled on the TV, the TV remote may already control basic Apple TV navigation over HDMI. Brand names include Anynet+ on Samsung, SimpLink on LG, and BRAVIA Sync on Sony.
This is a partial workaround. It may handle arrows, select, back, and volume, but it will not replace Siri voice search or every Apple TV gesture.
Before replacing it
Check couch cushions, under furniture, and nearby blankets with a phone flashlight. Siri Remotes are small and easy to slide into narrow spots.
If you have an older Apple TV remote from another model, try pairing it as a backup. Some generations remain compatible enough for basic control even if they differ in design.
