TV screens are not ordinary glass. Modern LED, QLED, and OLED panels usually have delicate anti-glare or anti-reflective coatings, and the wrong cleaner can leave permanent cloudy marks or fine scratches.
The safe method is simple: power off the TV, use microfiber, use very little liquid, and never spray the display directly. This guide covers the exact process and the things to avoid.

Use this if your TV has fingerprints, dust, streaks, or light smudges and you want to clean it safely. It applies to flat-panel TVs, including OLED models, which are especially sensitive to pressure.
Clean the screen safely
- Turn the TV off and unplug it. A dark screen makes dust and fingerprints easier to see, and cleaning an unpowered screen is safer.
- Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth like the kind used for eyeglasses or camera lenses.
- Wipe gently in straight strokes. Avoid scrubbing and avoid circular rubbing.
- For marks that remain, lightly dampen the cloth with distilled water. The cloth should be barely damp, never dripping.
- Wipe the smudge gently, then follow immediately with a dry part of the cloth.
- Let the screen air-dry for a minute before plugging the TV back in.
Most dust and fingerprints come off with a dry cloth. Distilled water is useful because tap water can leave mineral streaks.
Avoid cleaners that damage the coating
Do not use window cleaner, ammonia, alcohol, harsh household sprays, disinfecting wipes, paper towels, tissues, or rough cotton cloths on the display surface.
Glass cleaners that are fine for windows can strip or stain a TV’s anti-glare coating. Once that coating is damaged, more cleaning will not restore it.
If plain water is not enough, use only a cleaner labeled safe for electronics or TV screens. Spray it onto the cloth, not directly onto the screen.
Do not press hard
Use light pressure, especially on OLED panels. Pressing firmly can create temporary dark patches and, in rare cases, permanent panel damage. Let the cloth and moisture do the work instead of force.
Paper towels and tissues may feel soft, but they are abrasive at a tiny scale and can create fine scratches over repeated cleanings. A dedicated microfiber cloth is a small purchase that prevents expensive damage.
Clean the frame separately
The plastic or metal bezel around the display can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap if needed. Keep soap and extra moisture away from the actual screen and from openings around the frame.
