Chromecast issues usually come from one of three places: the phone and Chromecast are not on the same local network, the app is stuck, or the Chromecast/router needs a clean restart. Work through those before resetting everything.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Chromecast with Google TV, Chromecast Ultra, third-generation Chromecast, and older Chromecast devices when casting fails, the icon disappears, or the TV shows a blank screen.
Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network
This is the most common cause because both devices can have internet while still being unable to see each other.
- On your phone or computer, open Wi-Fi settings and note the exact network name.
- Open the Google Home app, tap the Chromecast, open the gear icon, and check Device information for its Wi-Fi network.
- If your router has separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz names, put the phone and Chromecast on the same one.
- Avoid guest networks because they often isolate devices from each other.
- Try casting again after both devices are on the same local network.
Restart the Chromecast and router
A power restart clears many temporary discovery and connection issues.
- Unplug the Chromecast power cable from the wall adapter or USB power source.
- Wait about 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Restart the router by unplugging it for about 30 seconds, then reconnecting it.
- Wait for the router and Chromecast to fully boot.
- Try casting again from your phone.
Update or reinstall the Google Home app and casting app
App versions can break casting after phone or streaming-service updates.
- Update Google Home from the App Store or Google Play.
- Update the app you are casting from, such as YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, or another streaming app.
- Restart the phone.
- If one app still fails, uninstall and reinstall that app.
- Try casting from a different app to see whether the problem follows one app or the Chromecast device.
More control
Check router isolation and VPNs
Client isolation or AP isolation can block local device discovery. VPNs on the phone or router can do the same. Turn those off temporarily to test.
Factory reset only after basics
Press and hold the Chromecast physical button for about 15 seconds until the light flashes, then set it up again in Google Home.
Use stable power
If Chromecast disappears or reboots often, use the included wall adapter instead of a TV USB port that may not supply enough power.
