What spyware does
Different tools collect different information, but the basic pattern is similar.
- It often installs quietly through a free app, cracked software, browser extension, phishing link, or bundled installer.
- It runs in the background without an obvious window or icon.
- It may collect browsing history, keystrokes, location, messages, photos, app activity, microphone access, or camera access.
- The data is sent to whoever controls it, which may be an advertiser, criminal, or someone using stalkerware.
- More advanced spyware may persist after casual deletion or hide from normal app lists.
How spyware differs from other malware
The categories can overlap, but the goals are different.
- A virus is usually focused on spreading and may damage or disrupt systems.
- Adware visibly pushes unwanted ads and redirects.
- Spyware tries to stay hidden while collecting information.
- Some malware does several jobs at once, such as spying, stealing passwords, and showing ads.

Symptoms worth checking
Unusual battery drain, a hot idle device, unexplained data usage, camera or microphone indicators turning on, unfamiliar apps, or unknown account activity are reasons to investigate.
Be careful with stalkerware situations
If you believe a partner, family member, or someone with physical access installed monitoring software, get safety guidance before resetting the device. A reset can alert the person monitoring you.
Use reputable scanners
Use Windows Security or a well-known mobile or desktop security app. Avoid random spyware removal tools from ads or popups because some are spyware themselves.
