PayPal Friends and Family is meant for people you personally know. When a stranger asks for it during a sale, job, or online relationship, the request usually exists to remove your buyer protection.
Does this affect you?
Use this for PayPal payments in the United States tied to marketplace purchases, tickets, online sellers, romance scams, fake jobs, or anyone you only know online.
Recognize the red flag before you pay
A transaction with a stranger should not be routed as a personal gift.
- Use Goods and Services for purchases, services, tickets, deposits, and marketplace transactions. That option is designed for buyer and seller transactions.
- Be skeptical of excuses about avoiding fees, giving you a discount, company reimbursement, or not having a business account. These are common scripts.
- In romance or online friendship scams, be extra careful when the person asks for a payment method that gives you no protection.
- If a seller refuses Goods and Services for an obvious purchase, treat the refusal itself as the warning sign.
- If the seller pushes away from PayPal entirely and asks for wire transfer, bank transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift cards, walk away.
What to do if you already sent the money
Friends and Family payments are hard to reverse, but still report quickly.
- Open the transaction in PayPal Activity and try Report a problem. PayPal may still review fraud reports even when normal buyer protection does not apply.
- If the payment used a linked credit card, contact the card issuer and ask about a chargeback or fraud dispute.
- Report the scam at reportfraud.ftc.gov. If it happened on a marketplace or dating platform, report the account there too.
- For larger losses or online fraud schemes, consider reports to local police and the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
- Stop communication and ignore any follow-up claim that you must pay another fee to unlock a refund. That is another scam.
More control
The fee buys protection
For strangers, freelancers, and marketplace purchases, the Goods and Services fee is usually worth it because it creates a dispute path if the item never arrives or is misrepresented.
Check seller history
A brand-new account, no reviews, no public history, and a request to skip PayPal protections together are enough reason to choose another seller.
