Yahoo has two separate sign-in protection systems: Account Key and Two-Step Verification. Account Key is passwordless approval in the Yahoo app, while Two-Step Verification keeps the password and adds a second code or approval. They do not run at the same time.

Use this for Yahoo Mail on web, iPhone, or Android when enabling two-step verification, using Account Key, or fixing codes and approval prompts that do not work.
Turn on two-step verification
Do this from a device where you are already signed in.
- Go to login.yahoo.com and open Account info > Account security.
- Turn on Two-step verification.
- If Account Key is active, follow Yahoo’s prompt to turn it off first because the two features are mutually exclusive.
- Choose a second-step method, such as text message, authenticator app, or security key.
- Follow the confirmation steps, such as entering a code or registering the key.
- Save any backup codes Yahoo offers in a password manager or printed record.
If Account Key or codes do not work
The fix depends on which system you use.
- If Account Key prompts do not appear, make sure Yahoo Mail app notifications are enabled in the phone’s system settings.
- Confirm the phone has internet access because Account Key prompts arrive over data, not SMS.
- If a text or authenticator code is rejected, set the phone’s date and time to automatic.
- Make sure you are using the Yahoo code in the authenticator app, not a code for another account.
- If the phone is lost, choose Try another way or More options on the sign-in screen.
- Use a saved backup code if you have one, then replace the old method after signing in.
- If no backup method works, use Yahoo account recovery with the phone or alternate email on file.

Backup codes matter
Store backup codes when setup offers them, not after the phone is gone. A password manager or printed copy is safer than a screenshot on the same device.
Keep recovery methods current
A recovery phone number and alternate email under Account security make two-factor recovery much faster if the main device is lost.
Authenticator apps beat SMS for many users
SMS can be delayed or vulnerable to SIM swaps. Authenticator apps generate codes on the device and are harder to hijack remotely.
Review recent activity
After regaining access, check Account security > Recent activity for unfamiliar sign-ins, especially if a phone was lost or stolen.
