Steam Account Locked: How to Unlock and Recover It

Steam account locks usually involve Steam Guard codes, lost authenticator access, or a security hold after unusual activity. The right recovery path depends on whether you still control the code source.

Does this affect you?

Use this for the Steam desktop client, Steam mobile app, or Steam website when sign-in asks for a Steam Guard code you cannot provide, says the account is locked, or mentions account limitations.

If you still have the Steam Guard code source

Use the current code, not an old screenshot.

  1. If you use Steam Mobile Authenticator, open the Steam app and enter the current code shown. It refreshes about every 30 seconds.
  2. If Steam Guard uses email, check the inbox and spam folder for the account email. Request a fresh code if the old one is more than about 15 minutes old.
  3. If Steam asks for a recovery code, look for the 25-character code shown when Mobile Authenticator was first enabled.
  4. Enter the code exactly, without spaces before or after it.
  5. If valid codes fail, set your phone and computer clocks to automatic time because Steam Guard codes are time-based.

If the phone, authenticator, or email is gone

Steam’s slower process protects accounts, wallets, games, and inventories from theft.

  1. Go to help.steampowered.com and choose I can’t sign in.
  2. Enter your Steam account name or email.
  3. Follow the prompts for no longer having access to Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator or the account email.
  4. Provide ownership details such as old passwords, purchase history, payment information, CD keys, or original account information.
  5. Wait for Steam Support’s review and any built-in waiting period. There is no shortcut around it.
  6. Once approved, remove the old authenticator and set up a new one.

More control

Save the recovery code

Steam shows the 25-character Mobile Authenticator recovery code once during setup. Store it in a password manager or written record outside the phone.

Remove Authenticator before switching phones

Before wiping a phone, open Steam app > Steam Guard > Remove Authenticator or transfer it properly. Wiping first is one of the most common causes of lockout.

Limited account is different

A limited Steam account is not the same as a security lock. Limited status applies to accounts that have not spent the required amount on Steam and restricts features like trading or chat while still allowing sign-in and play.

Keep the email current

Steam ultimately uses the email on file for recovery signals. An outdated email address can make every recovery step slower.
