Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator codes live in the Steam app installation on a specific phone. If that phone is lost, wiped, or the app was reinstalled before you removed the authenticator, Steam must verify ownership before letting you back in.

Use this for any Steam account protected by the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator when you no longer have working codes from the Steam mobile app.
Use the Steam Guard recovery code
This is the fast path if you saved the code Steam showed during authenticator setup.
- Go to the Steam sign-in page and enter your account name and password.
- At the Steam Guard prompt, choose I lost my phone, Recover account, or the closest matching link.
- Enter the recovery code you saved when you enabled the Mobile Authenticator.
- After Steam accepts the code, remove the old authenticator or transfer protection to the current phone.
- Open the Steam app on the new phone, set up Steam Guard again, and save the new recovery code somewhere safer than the phone itself.
If you do not have the recovery code
Steam is careful here because accounts can hold games, wallet funds, inventory items, and market access.
- Go to help.steampowered.com and choose I can’t sign in.
- Follow the path for lost Steam Guard or lost Mobile Authenticator access.
- Provide the details Steam requests, such as the original email address, previous passwords, purchase history, CD keys, or payment information.
- If you still control the email address on the account, use it for verification because it can speed the review.
- Wait for Steam Support to approve authenticator removal.
- After sign-in works again, set up Mobile Authenticator on the current phone under Steam app > Steam Guard and save the new recovery code.
More control
Steam shows the recovery code once
The recovery code is meant for exactly this situation. Store it in a password manager, a secure note outside Steam, or a printed record. A screenshot only on the lost phone is not enough.
Remove it before changing phones
If you know a phone change is coming, open Steam app > Steam Guard > Remove Authenticator while you still have access. That avoids the slower support process.
Expect trade and market holds
After authenticator removal, Steam may place multi-day holds on trading and Community Market activity. This is a theft-prevention delay, not a technical failure.
A spare phone can help some users
For accounts with valuable inventories, keeping Steam Guard active on a secure spare device can reduce panic if the daily phone is lost.
