Instagram verification codes are meant to protect the account, but they can also block the owner when texts are delayed, authenticator codes are out of sync, or the phone number on file is gone. Work through the code source first, then move to recovery if there is no way to receive a code.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Instagram on iPhone, Android, or a desktop browser when an SMS code never arrives, a six-digit code is rejected, or two-factor authentication points to a phone or authenticator app you no longer have.
Request a fresh code and check the basics
Only the newest code usually works, and codes expire quickly.
- On the Instagram code screen, choose Resend code or Get new code instead of reusing an older message.
- If the code is sent by text, make sure the phone has signal and can receive other SMS messages.
- Look at the newest Instagram text. Carriers sometimes deliver messages out of order after several requests.
- Type the code exactly as shown and remove spaces before or after it. Autofill can add an invisible trailing space.
- If you use an authenticator app, set the phone’s date and time to automatic. A wrong device clock can produce codes Instagram rejects.
- If two fresh codes fail, stop requesting more for a moment and use another recovery method.
Use a backup code
This works only if you saved backup codes when two-factor authentication was enabled.
- On the code screen, choose Try another way or Enter a backup code.
- Enter one saved eight-digit backup code. Each one works only once.
- After you get in, open Settings and privacy > Accounts Center > Password and security > Two-factor authentication.
- Generate a new set of backup codes because one or more old codes may now be used.
- Store the new codes somewhere separate from the phone, such as a password manager or printed record.
Recover the account when no code is available
Use this if the phone number is disconnected, the authenticator app was on a lost phone, or every code method fails.
- On the login screen, tap Get help logging in or Forgot password.
- Choose Need more help or My account is compromised if those options appear.
- Use a login link sent to the email address on file if Instagram offers one. Check spam as well as the inbox.
- If you cannot reach any saved contact method, follow the prompts for I do not have access to these.
- Complete Instagram’s ownership review, which may ask for ID or a video selfie. Wait for the reply by email rather than submitting repeated requests.
More control
Authenticator apps are more reliable than SMS
Text messages depend on your carrier and phone number. An authenticator app generates codes on the device and does not require cell service, which is useful when traveling or switching carriers.
Keep more than one fallback
Instagram lets you keep multiple two-factor options, such as an authenticator app plus backup codes. Having both prevents one lost phone from becoming a full lockout.
Confirm your recovery email
Accounts Center > Personal details should show an email address you can actually access and confirm. That address is what makes recovery possible when the code method breaks.
Never share verification codes
Instagram will not ask you to read a code to support, a friend, or a stranger in DMs. Anyone asking for the code is trying to take over the account.
