Instagram Account Suspended or Disabled? How to Get It Back

Opening Instagram and seeing a suspension or disabled-account message is unnerving, especially when the app does not explain much. The recovery path depends on what Instagram shows, but the first real step is almost always an appeal through Instagram or Meta’s official flow.

Does this affect you?

Use this for personal, creator, or business Instagram accounts in the app or at instagram.com. Instagram uses suspension and disabling in similar ways, but a suspension is usually temporary while the account is reviewed. A disabled account is more serious and may become permanent if Instagram decides the account violated its Community Guidelines or Terms of Use.

Appeal directly from the app

This is the fastest route when Instagram shows the review option on the login screen.

  1. Open Instagram and try to sign in normally. If the account is restricted, you should see the enforcement message instead of your feed.
  2. Read the message before tapping through it. It may mention a guideline issue, suspicious activity, or another reason for the action.
  3. Look for Tell us, Request Review, Appeal, or a similar button on that screen.
  4. Follow the prompts to confirm ownership. Instagram may ask for a video selfie where you turn your head so it can compare your face with existing profile photos.
  5. If video selfie verification is not offered, enter the confirmation code sent to the email address or phone number already on the account.
  6. Submit the appeal once, then wait. Reviews often take a few days, and high-volume periods can take longer.
  7. Watch the email address attached to the account, including spam or junk, because Instagram usually sends the decision by email.

If the appeal screen never appears

Use this when the app only shows an unavailable-page message or gives you no useful review button.

  1. Open a browser on your phone or computer and go to help.instagram.com.
  2. Search the Help Center for disabled account to find Meta’s current disabled-account contact form.
  3. Enter the username and the email or phone number linked to the account.
  4. Add a short, factual explanation if you believe the action was a mistake. Keep it calm and specific.
  5. If Instagram asks for government ID, upload only what the form requests. After the review is complete, remove the copy from your device.
  6. Submit the form and save any confirmation or case number that appears.
  7. Keep checking the recovery email and spam folder for Meta’s reply.

More control

Common triggers

Reports on posts or comments, a burst of likes or follows, VPN logins from a new country, third-party follower or growth tools, and repeated failed login attempts can all trigger a review, even when the account owner did not intend to break any rule.

Make the appeal easier to review

Submit one complete appeal and give it time. Duplicate appeals and long, angry explanations rarely help and can slow the process. If Instagram asks for a video selfie, use good lighting and the same device or network you normally use when possible.

When the decision is final

If Instagram confirms a serious Community Guidelines violation, the account may not have another recovery path after the review. In that case, creating a new account with accurate information is safer than trying unofficial recovery services.

Prevent another suspension

After access returns, enable two-factor authentication in Accounts Center > Password and security, review Apps and Websites, and remove anything unfamiliar. Avoid tools that promise automated followers, likes, or engagement.
