Google gives you two different deletion choices: remove only Gmail from a Google Account, or delete the entire Google Account. Most people who want to stop using a Gmail address only need the first option.
Does this affect you?
Use this for personal Google Accounts. School and work Google Workspace accounts may require an administrator.
Delete just the Gmail service
This keeps the Google Account but removes Gmail email access.
- Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in.
- Open Data & Privacy.
- Under your data options, choose Delete a Google service.
- Re-enter the password if prompted.
- Find Gmail and select the delete or trash icon.
- Add an alternate email address so the Google Account can still be used without Gmail.
- Confirm that Gmail messages and the ability to send or receive at that address will be deleted.
Delete the entire Google Account
This removes Google services tied to the account.
- Go to myaccount.google.com > Data & Privacy.
- Choose Delete your Google Account.
- Review the list of affected services, such as Gmail, Photos, Drive, Calendar, Contacts, YouTube, and Play purchases.
- Check the boxes confirming you understand the consequences.
- Confirm with the account password and choose Delete Account.
More control
Download data first
Use takeout.google.com before deleting Gmail or the entire account. Export Gmail messages, Drive files, Photos, Contacts, and other data you want to keep.
Check connected apps and subscriptions
If you use Sign in with Google for other sites, set up another login method before deletion. Cancel Google Play subscriptions separately so billing does not become messy.
When unsure, do less
If you are not certain, sign out, stop using the address, or remove it from devices instead of deleting it. Full deletion can become impossible to reverse after Google’s recovery window closes.
