Coinbase recovery is intentionally stricter than most account resets because the account may hold money and cryptocurrency. A forgotten password is usually quick; losing two-factor access takes longer by design.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Coinbase in a desktop browser and the Coinbase app on iPhone or Android when you forgot the password, lost the 2FA device, or see a locked or restricted account message.
You forgot your password but still have 2FA
This is the faster recovery path.
- On the Coinbase login page, choose Forgot password.
- Enter the email address on the account.
- Open the reset email from Coinbase, including spam if needed.
- Create a long, unique password.
- Enter your normal two-factor code from the authenticator app or SMS.
- After signing in, open Settings > Security and review account activity before trading or withdrawing.
You lost access to two-factor authentication
Use this for a lost phone, deleted authenticator app, or unreachable phone number.
- After entering the password, look for Having trouble or Lost your 2FA device near the code step.
- Start Coinbase’s identity verification flow.
- Submit a clear photo of a government ID and complete the live selfie or other verification requested.
- Use good lighting and follow instructions carefully so a blurry submission does not restart the process.
- Wait for review. It may take a day or more than a week, and there is no legitimate way to pay to speed it up.
- Once approved, set up two-factor authentication again on a device you will keep.
More control
Report unauthorized access through official help
If you see unknown transactions, withdrawals, changed settings, or new withdrawal addresses, go directly to help.coinbase.com and look for unauthorized account access. Avoid searching for support phone numbers because scam call centers often impersonate Coinbase.
Use an authenticator app instead of SMS
SMS codes can be stolen through SIM-swap attacks. An authenticator app is not tied to your phone number and is usually safer for a crypto account.
Never share a wallet recovery phrase
Coinbase.com account recovery does not require the recovery phrase from a self-custody wallet. Anyone asking for that phrase is trying to steal the wallet.
