A locked Apple ID usually means Apple’s security system saw too many failed sign-in attempts or unusual activity. It is normally a protective hold, not a permanent ban.
Does this affect you?
Use this if your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, iCloud.com, or App Store sign-in says your Apple ID has been locked or disabled for security reasons.
Unlock through appleid.apple.com
This is the standard recovery path for most locked Apple IDs.
- Open a browser and go to appleid.apple.com.
- Enter your Apple ID email address and continue.
- If Apple says the account is locked, choose the option to unlock the account.
- Complete Apple’s identity verification, such as a trusted phone-number code or approval on a trusted Apple device.
- Reset the password when prompted. This is a normal part of unlocking.
- Sign back in on your devices using the new password.
Unlock from a trusted device you are still signed into
This is often faster when another Apple device still has access.
- On a trusted iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your name. On a Mac, open System Settings and select your Apple ID.
- Look for an alert about Apple ID security or open Sign-In & Security.
- Follow the prompts to verify your identity and unlock the account.
- Set the new password and use it on the device that was locked out.

Find what triggered the lock
Common causes include repeated wrong passwords, an old device or app retrying an outdated saved password, travel or sign-in from a new location, or a suspicious purchase attempt.
Remove old devices
After you get back in, review Devices under Sign-In & Security and remove devices you no longer own or use. Old devices with stale passwords can keep triggering security checks.
Add stronger recovery
Enable two-factor authentication if it is not already on. Consider setting up a Recovery Contact or Recovery Key, and keep that information safe. If one device fails, you need another trusted route back in.
