  • Few-shot examples show a few sample inputs and ideal outputs before the real request, so the model can copy the pattern.
  • Step-by-step reasoning prompts ask the model to break down a problem before answering, which can help with logic, planning, or multi-step tasks.
  • Output constraints define the exact format, such as valid JSON, a table, three bullets, no extra commentary, or a specific tone.
  • Iterative testing means running the prompt on many examples, noticing where it fails, and revising the wording until the results become dependable.

Context engineering means choosing which files, facts, examples, and background information to provide along with the prompt. As AI tools connect to email, calendars, documents, and databases, the information you include can matter as much as the wording.

Practice on one real task

Pick a recurring task, write a first prompt, run it several times, note what goes wrong, and adjust. That feedback loop teaches the skill faster than memorizing a long list of prompt formulas.
