On supported iPhones, Siri can hand certain questions to ChatGPT when ChatGPT is better suited to answer. The integration is optional, off until enabled, and meant for open-ended questions rather than normal device commands.
Does this affect you?
Use this for iPhone models that support Apple Intelligence running iOS 18.2 or later.
Turn on the ChatGPT extension for Siri
Enable it manually in Apple Intelligence settings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Scroll to ChatGPT Extension or ChatGPT.
- Turn on Use ChatGPT.
- Read the explanation about what may be shared with OpenAI.
- Optionally sign in to a ChatGPT account under ChatGPT Account if you want your account limits and settings to apply.
You can use a limited number of Siri-to-ChatGPT requests without a ChatGPT account. Plus or higher accounts may provide higher limits when connected.
Ask Siri and let it hand off to ChatGPT
You can let Siri offer or request ChatGPT directly.
- Activate Siri and ask normally.
- For complex writing, explaining, or general knowledge questions, Siri may ask whether to send the request to ChatGPT.
- Approve the handoff for that request, or allow similar requests in the future if you trust the setting.
- To route directly, say Ask ChatGPT followed by your question.
- Read the ChatGPT-labeled answer inside the Siri interface.
More control
Review confirmation preferences
If Siri asks every time and you want fewer prompts, revisit Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT Extension. You can also reset the confirmation behavior there.
Privacy changes if you sign in
Without a ChatGPT account, Apple says it obscures your IP address and OpenAI does not store requests tied to your identity in the same way. If you sign into ChatGPT, OpenAI account settings and retention rules apply.
Siri still handles device tasks
Timers, alarms, messages, music, smart home controls, and device actions stay with Siri. ChatGPT is for broader explanation, writing, and open-ended questions.
Turn it off anytime
Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT Extension and disable Use ChatGPT if you do not want Siri to offer the handoff.
