Apple Intelligence Writing Tools can proofread, rewrite, summarize, and adjust tone almost anywhere you select text on a supported Apple device. It does not live in a separate app; it appears from the normal text selection menu.
Does this affect you?
Use this for supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac models running iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later. Apple Intelligence device, language, and region support can vary.
Turn on Apple Intelligence
Writing Tools will not appear until Apple Intelligence is enabled and ready.
- Open Settings or System Settings.
- Go to Apple Intelligence & Siri. On some older software, look inside Siri settings for the Apple Intelligence option.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence.
- Make sure the device is signed in with an Apple Account, uses a supported language and region, and is connected to Wi-Fi for the initial model download.
- Wait for the download to finish. It can take several minutes or longer depending on the connection.
- If no Apple Intelligence option appears, the device may not be supported. iPhone support generally starts with iPhone 15 Pro-class models and newer, while iPad and Mac support generally requires M1 or later.
Use Writing Tools on text you have written
Open it from the selection menu in supported apps.
- Type or paste text in Notes, Mail, Messages, Pages, Safari, or another supported app.
- Select the text, or place the cursor in an empty text field where supported.
- Open the edit menu and choose Writing Tools. On Mac, right-click selected text or use the small Writing Tools icon near the cursor.
- Choose Proofread, Rewrite, Summarize, Friendly, Professional, Concise, or another available option.
- Review the preview or marked changes before accepting.
More control
Language support matters
Writing Tools launched with English and expanded to additional languages over time. If it is missing, check Apple Intelligence & Siri language settings and confirm your device language is supported.
Some requests may leave the device
Basic proofreading may run on device. More complex requests can use Apple Private Cloud Compute. Apple designed that system for privacy, but sensitive text still deserves thought before processing.
It is not a fact-checker
Writing Tools can improve grammar, tone, and structure. It does not verify whether a statistic, date, medical claim, or business statement is true.
Some apps may not show it
Apps with custom text editors may not support the standard Writing Tools menu even on eligible hardware. Try Notes or Mail to confirm the feature works on the device.
