How to Use AI to Make a Presentation

AI can build a presentation in two practical ways: generate slides directly inside PowerPoint or Google Slides, or create a slide-by-slide outline in a chatbot that you paste into your own deck. The best choice depends on what tools you already have.

Does this affect you?

Use this when you need a slide deck quickly and want AI to help with structure, wording, and first-draft content.

Generate slides directly with built-in AI

This is fastest if your account includes Copilot or Gemini.

  • PowerPoint: Open a presentation and click Copilot from the ribbon or floating button. Ask it to create a deck about your topic, including the audience, tone, and slide count.
  • Copilot can generate a title slide, section slides, content slides, and a matching design theme. Review each slide and edit or regenerate weak parts.
  • Google Slides: Open a deck, click the Gemini icon, and describe the slide or deck you want. Gemini can draft content and suggest layouts.
  • Use specific prompts such as 10 slides on Q3 sales results for a leadership audience in a formal tone.
  • If the AI icon is missing, your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace plan may not include the feature or your admin may not have enabled it.

Write the content with a free chatbot, then build the slides yourself

This works with PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, Canva, or any deck tool.

  1. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or another chatbot.
  2. Describe the topic, audience, purpose, tone, and number of slides.
  3. Ask for a slide-by-slide outline with a short title and 3 to 5 bullets per slide.
  4. Copy the outline into your presentation app manually, or use outline view if your app can convert it into slides.
  5. Ask for speaker notes or short talking points for each slide.
  6. Apply a design theme and adjust layout inside the presentation app.

More control

Keep bullets short

AI often writes full sentences. Ask it to shorten each bullet to under eight words or rewrite for presentation slides, not a report.

Verify real data

AI cannot know your company figures unless you provide them, and it may invent statistics if the prompt is vague. Check every number, claim, and source.

Regenerate only weak slides

Copilot and Gemini can usually revise one slide or section without rebuilding the whole deck. That is useful when most of the draft is good.

Standalone tools are another option

AI presentation apps can generate designed decks from a prompt and often have free tiers, but many limit exports or add watermarks until you pay.
