ChatGPT does not normally work like a streaming-service trial where you get a few free days of the paid plan and then get charged. Instead, ChatGPT has a free plan that does not expire and paid plans you can subscribe to month by month.

Use the free ChatGPT plan
This is the no-card, no-countdown option most people want.
- Go to chatgpt.com or install the official ChatGPT app.
- Create an account or sign in.
- Use the free plan without entering a credit card.
- Expect access to capable everyday chat, writing help, and limited access to more advanced features depending on current plan limits.
- During busy periods, free users may see slower access, temporary limits, or lighter model routing. That does not mean a trial expired.
The free plan has no expiration date. You can continue using it without paying, though upgrade prompts may appear.
Try ChatGPT Plus without a long-term commitment
There is no free Plus trial, but the subscription is monthly.
- Open ChatGPT settings or your profile menu.
- Choose Upgrade plan.
- Select Plus and enter payment details. You are charged for the first month immediately.
- Use the paid features for the billing period.
- Before the next billing date, open Settings > Subscription and cancel if you do not want another charge.
Canceling normally keeps Plus active until the end of the paid period rather than refunding the unused portion.

Free ChatGPT is not just a demo
The free plan supports real chat and useful everyday tasks. Paid plans mainly raise limits, improve priority during busy periods, and unlock or expand newer features.
API trial credits are separate
OpenAI developer API accounts sometimes receive trial credits, but those are unrelated to ChatGPT Plus. API billing lives at platform.openai.com and does not apply to normal ChatGPT app conversations.
Promotions come and go
OpenAI may run limited promotions, such as student offers or discounts, but they are not permanent. Check official OpenAI pages, email, or in-app notices before assuming an offer exists today.
Avoid fake free Plus offers
Sites, extensions, or messages promising free ChatGPT Plus outside OpenAI’s own site are often phishing attempts. Upgrade only through chatgpt.com or the official app.
