If YouTube spins forever, opens to a blank page, or videos will not play while other sites work, the cause is often browser-specific. Common triggers include ad blockers, privacy extensions, stuck YouTube site data, VPN or DNS routing, hardware acceleration, or a temporary YouTube outage.

Use this for YouTube in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari on Windows or Mac. If YouTube also fails in the mobile app on another connection, the problem may be on YouTube’s side.
Check if it is a YouTube-wide outage
This takes less than a minute and can save wasted troubleshooting.
- Use your phone on mobile data if possible, or another device on a different connection.
- Check an outage-reporting site such as Downdetector and search for YouTube.
- If reports are spiking, wait and try again later. There may be nothing to fix on your browser.
- If reports look normal, continue with local browser checks.
Disable ad blockers and extensions
Ad blockers and privacy extensions are among the most common reasons YouTube fails to load or play.
- Open a private or Incognito window: Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome or Edge, Ctrl+Shift+P in Firefox, or Cmd+Shift+N in Safari.
- Try YouTube there. Extensions are usually off by default in private windows.
- If YouTube works, open your browser extension manager. Use chrome://extensions in Chrome, edge://extensions in Edge, or about:addons in Firefox.
- Turn off ad blockers, privacy tools, VPN extensions, and script blockers one at a time, testing YouTube after each change.
Clear cache and cookies for YouTube
Damaged YouTube site data can prevent the player or page scripts from loading correctly.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Delete on Windows or Cmd+Shift+Delete on Mac.
- Set the time range to All time.
- Select Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files.
- Clear the data.
- Reload YouTube and sign back in if needed.

Compare another browser
If YouTube fails in Chrome but works in Edge, Firefox, or Safari, keep troubleshooting the original browser. The internet connection and YouTube service are probably not the main issue.
Test VPN and DNS
Some VPN routes or DNS settings can make YouTube slow or unavailable. Temporarily disconnect the VPN or try public DNS such as 8.8.8.8 to see whether loading improves.
Disable hardware acceleration
If the page loads but videos will not play, search your browser settings for hardware acceleration or graphics acceleration, turn it off, and relaunch the browser. This can help with driver-related video playback problems.
Restart the router if video sites broadly fail
If other video-heavy sites fail too, unplug the router, wait about a minute, plug it back in, and give it a few minutes to reconnect before testing again.
