Microsoft Edge Kids Mode is no longer available in current Edge. The safer-browsing pieces it provided now live mostly in Microsoft Family Safety, with a separate Edge profile as a lighter convenience option on shared computers.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Microsoft Edge on Windows or Mac if you went looking for the old Browse in Kids Mode option and cannot find it. Microsoft removed Kids Mode starting with Edge version 117 in September 2023, so older guides that point to that button are out of date.
Set up Microsoft Family Safety, the official replacement
Family Safety ties web filtering to the child’s Microsoft account.
- On Windows, open Settings > Accounts > Family and choose Add someone. You can also start at family.microsoft.com in any browser.
- Add the child with their own Microsoft account, creating one if needed.
- Accept the family invitation from the child account.
- Open the child’s profile in the Family Safety app or at family.microsoft.com.
- Turn on Content filters > Web and search.
- Enable Filter inappropriate websites. This forces SafeSearch and blocks adult sites in Edge while the child is signed in.
- Add specific websites to Allowed or Blocked lists if you want tighter control.
Create a separate locked-down Edge profile
This is quicker on a shared computer, but it is not as enforceable as Family Safety.
- In Edge, click the profile icon and choose Add profile > Add.
- Create a profile only for the child.
- Switch to that profile.
- Open Settings > Privacy, search, and services and set Tracking prevention to Strict.
- Under address bar and search settings, choose a search provider with SafeSearch and enable SafeSearch in that provider’s settings. For Bing, use bing.com/account/general.
- Add approved kid-friendly sites to the Favorites bar.
- Keep the child profile separate from your personal account.
An older child may be able to change these settings. Use Family Safety when restrictions need to be enforced.
More control
Why Kids Mode disappeared
Kids Mode overlapped with Family Safety and saw limited use. Microsoft consolidated parental controls into Family Safety, which covers more than a temporary browser space.
Family Safety can manage more than browsing
From the child profile, you can set screen time schedules, review activity reports, and limit apps or games on Windows and Xbox. That makes it better for a child who uses the device regularly.
Use mobile Family Safety too
The Microsoft Family Safety app on iPhone and Android can manage the family group, and web filtering follows the child account into Edge on supported devices. On a shared Mac, the separate-profile method is often the quickest browser-only option.
Replace the old kids start page
The colorful Kids Mode landing page is gone. Add trusted sites such as educational or child-friendly pages to Favorites, or set one as the profile homepage under Settings > Start, home, and new tabs.
