Modern browsers can translate a full web page in place, keeping the layout, images, and links while replacing the visible text with machine translation. The button looks different in each browser, but the workflow is similar.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari on Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone, or iPad when you land on a page in a language you do not read. Translation is automatic and machine-generated, so important wording may still need human review.
Translate a page in Chrome or Edge
Chrome and Edge are Chromium-based and work almost the same way.
- Open a page in another language.
- Look for the translate icon near the right side of the address bar.
- Click it and choose your preferred language.
- Wait for the page to translate in place.
- Use Show original from the same popup if you want to switch back.
If the icon does not appear, right-click the page and choose Translate to your language.
Translate a page in Firefox
Firefox built-in translation can work locally after language files download.
- Open a page in another language.
- Click the translate icon in the address bar.
- Confirm or change the detected language.
- Click Translate.
- Let Firefox download a language pack if it asks the first time.
If the icon is missing, check the Firefox menu for Translate Page or open Settings > General > Translations.
Translate a page in Safari
Safari uses built-in Apple translation on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
- Open a page in another language.
- Click the translate icon in the address bar on Mac, or tap aA or the translate icon on iPhone or iPad.
- Choose the language.
- Use View Original from the same control to switch back.
More control
The icon may not appear automatically
Pages with little text, mixed languages, or unusual structure may not trigger detection. Right-click translation in Chrome or Edge can still work.
Check translation settings
Chrome uses Settings > Languages > Offer to translate pages. Firefox uses Settings > General > Translations. If offers are disabled, the icon may not appear.
Some content may not translate
Text inside images, embedded PDFs, and content loaded after the initial page may be missed. Reload after the page finishes loading and translate again if needed.
