When Chrome will not open at all, it is often already stuck in the background without a visible window. A leftover process can block a new window from starting, making it look like the icon does nothing. Start by force-closing Chrome before changing profiles or reinstalling.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Google Chrome on Windows 10, Windows 11, or macOS when clicking Chrome does nothing, the icon flashes or bounces once, or Chrome opens briefly and closes immediately.
Force-close every Chrome process, then reopen it
This is the most common fix for a silent Chrome launch failure.
On Windows:
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and open Task Manager.
- Open the Processes tab.
- Find every Google Chrome process.
- Select each one and click End task until none remain.
- Open Chrome again from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.
On Mac:
- Press Cmd+Option+Esc.
- Select Google Chrome in Force Quit Applications.
- Click Force Quit.
- Wait a few seconds.
- Open Chrome from the Dock or Applications folder.
Restart your computer
If force-closing Chrome does not help, restart the computer. Save work in other apps, restart from the Start menu or Apple menu, then try opening Chrome before launching other programs. A restart clears other background conflicts that may be holding Chrome open or blocked.
Reset your Chrome user profile
A corrupted profile folder can stop Chrome before a window appears. Renaming the profile makes Chrome create a clean one.
On Windows, press Windows+R, enter %LOCALAPPDATA%GoogleChromeUser Data, and rename the Default folder to Default.old. On Mac, open Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G, go to ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome, and rename Default to Default.old. Then open Chrome again. If it launches, sign back into your Google Account so synced bookmarks and passwords return.
More control
Install the latest Chrome over the current copy
A failed update can leave Chrome unable to start. Download the current installer from google.com/chrome and run it. This can repair the app without removing your browser data.
Check antivirus blocks
Security software can mistakenly quarantine or block Chrome. Review blocked apps or quarantine in the antivirus tool, and briefly disable protection only to test whether Chrome opens. Turn protection back on afterward.
Reinstall Chrome
If needed, uninstall Chrome from Windows Settings > Apps or remove it from Applications on Mac, restart, then install a fresh copy. This fixes most installation-level corruption.
Look beyond Chrome if other apps fail
If a fresh Chrome install still will not open and other browsers or apps also fail, the issue may be a graphics driver, Windows user profile, or system problem rather than Chrome itself.
