Missing OneDrive files are not always gone permanently. Deleted items go to OneDrive recycle bins for a limited time, and changed files may have earlier versions that can be restored.

Use this for personal OneDrive and Microsoft 365 work or school OneDrive on Windows, Mac, and the OneDrive website when files disappear, sync incorrectly, or are deleted from a shared folder.
Restore files from the OneDrive recycle bin
Use the web recycle bin first, even if the file is missing locally.
- Go to onedrive.com and sign in with the account that owned the file.
- Open Recycle bin from the left menu.
- Find the file or folder, sorting by deletion date if helpful.
- Select the item.
- Click Restore.
The file returns to its original location. Personal OneDrive commonly keeps deleted files for 30 days. Microsoft 365 work or school accounts usually keep them for up to 93 days across recycle-bin stages, depending on admin settings.
Restore versions or recover from sync trouble
Use these paths when the file still exists or many files changed at once.
- For an overwritten file, right-click it on onedrive.com and choose Version history, then restore an earlier version.
- For many damaged files, use Settings > Restore your OneDrive and choose a time before the problem.
- If files appear on the website but not the computer, check the OneDrive cloud icon for sync errors or paused sync.
- Unlink and relink the computer from OneDrive settings if sync remains stuck.
- For shared folders, ask the owner to check their recycle bin if you cannot restore the item yourself.

OneDrive protects files stored in OneDrive. Files that were never saved inside OneDrive folders are not covered by OneDrive recycle bin or version history.

On Windows, OneDrive can back up common folders from Sync and backup settings. This routes those folders through OneDrive recovery tools.

If new files do not upload, check OneDrive storage. An account over its limit may stop syncing new data even though existing files remain.
