If Excel does nothing, flashes open and closes, or hangs on a blank screen, the cause is usually a stuck process, broken update, bad add-in, damaged Office files, or a corrupt startup profile.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2021, and Excel 2019 on Windows or Mac when the app itself or an Excel file from email, OneDrive, or local storage will not open.
Quick fixes: restart, update, and Safe Mode
Try these first because they solve many launch failures.
- Restart the computer to clear stuck EXCEL.EXE background processes.
- Install Windows updates, then open any Office app that still launches and choose File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Open Excel in Safe Mode by holding Ctrl while clicking Excel, or pressing Windows key + R, typing excel /safe, and pressing Enter.
- If Safe Mode works, disable COM add-ins under File > Options > Add-ins, then re-enable them one by one to find the problem.
Repair your Office installation
This replaces damaged Office program files without deleting documents.
- Open Apps and features, or Control Panel > Programs and Features on older Windows.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Click Modify.
- Choose Online Repair rather than Quick Repair.
- Let the repair finish, restart the PC, and try Excel again.
On Mac, quit Excel, move Microsoft Excel from Applications to Trash, and reinstall it from office.com. That is the closest equivalent to repair.
Clear a stuck startup file or profile
Use this if Excel hangs before opening a workbook.
- Close Excel and end any hidden EXCEL.EXE process in Task Manager.
- Paste %appdata%MicrosoftExcel into File Explorer.
- Rename the Excel folder to Excel-old.
- Open Excel again so it creates a fresh settings folder.
More control
Check antivirus and Protected View
Temporarily disable real-time protection only for testing, then turn it back on. If a file came from email or a browser download, save it locally and open it from inside Excel with File > Open.
Disable graphics acceleration for display conflicts
If Excel opens but shows blank or crashes around display activity, go to File > Options > Advanced > Display and disable hardware graphics acceleration, then restart Excel.
Use Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant
As a last resort, Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant can run deeper Office startup diagnostics automatically.
