Xfinity / Comcast Router Light Meaning: What Each Color Means

Xfinity Comcast gateway light ring colors

Xfinity gateways use the light ring or front status lights to show whether the device is starting up, online, pairing, updating, or failing to connect. Matching the color first can save a long support call.

Does this affect you?

Use this for Comcast Xfinity gateways such as XB6, XB7, XB8, and older standalone modems or modem/router combinations. Older devices may use separate icon lights instead of a single color ring.

Match your light color to what it means

These are the common meanings across current Xfinity gateway models.

  • Solid white: the gateway is online and working normally.
  • Blinking blue: WPS pairing mode is active. If you did not start WPS, press the WPS/power button briefly to cancel pairing.
  • Solid blue: normal during first activation or app setup.
  • Blinking white: startup, restart, or firmware update in progress. Wait a few minutes.
  • Solid orange: usually startup or firmware installation. Do not unplug it while an update is running.
  • Blinking orange: the gateway is trying to connect but has not locked onto service. If it continues, check outage and cable status.
  • Solid red: the gateway has a problem it cannot clear on its own, commonly signal or connectivity trouble.

What to do about a red or stuck orange light

Red needs action, and orange that never changes needs investigation.

  1. Use cellular data to check the Xfinity app or Xfinity Status Center for an outage.
  2. If no outage appears, unplug gateway power for 30 seconds.
  3. While it is unplugged, tighten the coax cable at the gateway and wall.
  4. Plug the gateway back in and wait 5 to 10 minutes.
  5. If the light returns to red or blinking orange with no outage listed, contact Xfinity because the line signal may need remote diagnostics or a technician.

More control

Older models use individual lights

Older Xfinity modem/router units may show Power, Online/Internet, US/DS, and Wi-Fi lights instead of a ring. Solid usually means good, blinking usually means connecting, and red or amber points to a problem.

Check gateway signal stats

While connected to the gateway, open 10.0.0.1 in a browser and sign in with the label credentials if available. Signal details under Gateway > Connection can help support diagnose downstream and upstream line problems.

Do not wait forever on red

If red persists more than 15 to 20 minutes after a proper restart, or returns repeatedly over several days, calling support with the exact light color is more efficient than repeating restarts.
