
Wi-Fi shares radio space with other networks and household electronics. Interference is especially common on 2.4 GHz, where microwaves, older cordless phones, baby monitors, Bluetooth, and neighboring routers can all crowd the air.
Does this affect you?
Use this if Wi-Fi slows or drops at odd times even though the internet provider and router appear to be working. Interference can make one room, one band, or one time of day noticeably worse than the rest.
Identify what is interfering
Look for patterns around devices and location.
- Microwave ovens are a classic 2.4 GHz problem. If Wi-Fi drops only while the microwave runs, that is a strong clue.
- Cordless phones and baby monitors using 2.4 GHz can create similar symptoms.
- Bluetooth speakers, headphones, keyboards, and mice also use 2.4 GHz, though modern Bluetooth usually coexists better than older gear.
- Neighboring Wi-Fi networks crowd the same channels, especially in apartments and dense neighborhoods.
- Metal appliances, mirrors, thick walls, and cabinets weaken signal and can make interference feel worse.
Switch bands or change channels
This is the main fix for most homes.
- Log into the router admin page or app.
- Move capable devices to 5 GHz, which is faster and usually less affected by microwaves and Bluetooth.
- For 2.4 GHz, open Wireless Channel settings and use channel 1, 6, or 11.
- Use a Wi-Fi analyzer app to see which of those channels is least crowded nearby.
- Save the setting and reconnect devices if needed.
More control
Band steering can choose poorly
Smart Connect or band steering may place a device on 2.4 GHz even when 5 GHz would work better. If one device suffers more than others, try splitting 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz into separate network names temporarily.
Placement is part of interference control
Keep the router away from microwaves, cordless-phone bases, large metal appliances, floors, and enclosed cabinets. A central open shelf often improves stability more than another setting.
Mesh can reduce the distance problem
A mesh system places access points closer to devices, so Wi-Fi does not have to push through as many walls or compete as hard from one faraway router.
