
QoS, or Quality of Service, tells a router which traffic should go first when the network is busy. It can keep calls and games smoother while downloads, updates, and streams compete for the same connection.
Does this affect you?
Use this if gaming, video calls, or work apps lag when someone else starts a large download or 4K stream. QoS is most useful in homes where multiple devices share limited bandwidth at the same time.
Turn on and configure QoS
Start with the automatic mode if your router offers one.
- Log into the router admin page, commonly 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, or open the router app.
- Look for QoS, Quality of Service, Traffic Control, Bandwidth Control, Device Prioritization, Gaming Mode, Adaptive QoS, or Smart Queue Management.
- Turn QoS on. If there is a smart or automatic mode, use that first.
- If manual priority rules are available, set your work laptop, gaming console, or video-call device to High priority.
- If activity categories are available, prioritize gaming, voice, or video conferencing above downloads.
- Save changes and restart the router if prompted.
When QoS helps and when it does not
QoS manages traffic order; it does not create extra bandwidth.
- QoS helps when multiple activities compete at once.
- It does little when only one device is active because there is nothing to prioritize.
- It cannot fix an internet plan that is too slow even when the network is otherwise idle.
- It can reduce lag caused by a big upload or download filling the connection queue.
More control
SQM and bufferbloat matter for ping
Some routers call the feature SQM or bufferbloat control. This is especially useful when ping spikes during uploads or downloads. Instead of letting one transfer clog the line, the router keeps real-time traffic moving.
Prioritize narrowly
Do not mark every device as high priority. If everything is important, nothing is. Pick the few devices or activities that truly need low delay.
