An ONT, or Optical Network Terminal, is the fiber internet box that turns the provider fiber signal into a normal connection your router can use. It is the fiber version of a modem, but it handles light instead of coax or phone-line signals.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you have fiber service from providers such as Verizon Fios, AT&T Fiber, Google Fiber, or a regional fiber company, and you are trying to understand whether the ONT is the same thing as your router. In many homes it is a separate wall-mounted box; in some newer gateways it is built in.
What the ONT does and where it sits in your setup
The ONT is usually the first active device after the fiber line enters your home.
- The fiber-optic cable terminates at the ONT or at a small fiber jack that connects to it.
- Fiber carries data as pulses of light. The ONT converts that light signal into an electrical Ethernet connection.
- An Ethernet cable normally runs from the ONT to the router WAN or Internet port. The router then creates Wi-Fi and wired networking for your devices.
- Some providers combine ONT and router into one gateway. AT&T Fiber, for example, has used separate ONTs on older installs and integrated ONT hardware in newer gateways such as the BGW320.
Check the ONT during fiber outages
If the whole fiber connection is down, look at the ONT before blaming Wi-Fi.
- The ONT needs electrical power. If the home loses power, fiber internet stops unless backup power is present.
- A red or blinking signal, optical, or PON light often means the incoming fiber line or provider signal is not healthy. Restarting the router will not fix that.
- If ONT lights look normal but Wi-Fi is weak, the router placement, router hardware, or mesh coverage is the likely issue.
- Some providers offer battery backup mainly to keep fiber phone service working briefly during outages.
More control
You usually cannot replace the ONT yourself
Unlike many cable modems, ONTs are normally owned, installed, and provisioned by the fiber provider. They are matched to the provider network, so third-party swaps are not usually supported.
You can often use your own router after the ONT
Even when the ONT belongs to the provider, the router downstream may be replaceable depending on service requirements. Connect the router WAN port to the ONT Ethernet output or follow the provider bridge/passthrough instructions.
ONT is not the Wi-Fi radio
In most setups the ONT does not broadcast Wi-Fi. If wired speed is fine but wireless coverage is poor, improve the router or mesh system rather than chasing the ONT.
