
A device list tells you what is online. A network map helps you see how routers, mesh nodes, extenders, switches, and adapters connect, which is more useful when one room is slow or unreliable.

Use the router or mesh app map
Mesh apps usually have the best topology information because each node reports directly.
- Open the app for eero, Google Home/Nest Wifi, Orbi, Deco, or your mesh system.
- Look for Network Map, Topology, Devices, or a similar view.
- Check whether each node uses wired or wireless backhaul and whether its link is strong.
- Tap a node to see which devices are connected through it.
- For a single router, use Connected Devices or Attached Devices; it may not show a diagram, but it shows direct clients.
Use a scanning app
This helps when equipment comes from mixed brands.
- Install Fing, Angry IP Scanner, or another reputable scanner on a phone or computer.
- Connect to your home Wi-Fi and run a scan.
- Review each device IP address, name, and manufacturer guess.
- Compare the scan with your physical knowledge of TVs, printers, switches, and smart devices.
- Use paid visual maps only as a supplement; mesh apps are usually more accurate for node topology.
Sketch it yourself when tools fall short
Mixed networks often need a simple manual map.
- List every network hardware piece: modem, router, mesh nodes, extenders, switches, and powerline adapters.
- Write where each device physically sits.
- Note what each device connects to upstream.
- Add IP addresses from your scan beside the devices you identify.
- Keep the note handy for future troubleshooting.

Scanners cannot always see physical paths
A scanner can list devices, but it may not know which mesh node or overlapping 5 GHz signal a device is using. Mesh apps have that internal data.
Mapping helps before buying more gear
A map shows whether a weak room needs a moved mesh node, a new extender, a switch, or a wired access point.
