
An access point extends your existing network by broadcasting Wi-Fi from a new wired location. Unlike an extender, it uses Ethernet back to the router, so it avoids the wireless relay speed penalty.

Use this if you have Ethernet available in a weak Wi-Fi area and want better coverage from a standalone access point or an old router repurposed into AP mode.
Set up a dedicated access point
The goal is to add Wi-Fi without creating a second router network.
- Run Ethernet from a LAN port on the main router to the access point location.
- Connect that cable to the access point. Dedicated AP devices may use a WAN/Internet port, while old routers often use a LAN port in AP mode. Check the model instructions.
- Power on the access point and wait for its connection lights.
- Join the access point temporary Wi-Fi or open its companion app, then visit the setup address printed on the label, often 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.0.254.
- If using an old router, enable Access Point Mode, AP Mode, or Bridge Mode so DHCP and routing are disabled.
- Set the Wi-Fi name and password to match the main router for easier roaming, or use a separate name if you want manual control.
- Save and let the access point restart.
Confirm it works correctly
A quick check prevents hidden double-network problems.
- Connect a device to the access point Wi-Fi and load a website.
- Check the device IP address. It should be in the same range as devices on the main router, such as 192.168.1.x.
- If it uses a different range, DHCP was not disabled and the access point is acting like another router.
- Walk through the weak area and confirm signal is stronger.
- If you reused the same Wi-Fi name, walk between areas and make sure the phone roams without manual reconnects.
More control
Access points beat extenders when wiring exists
An extender repeats Wi-Fi wirelessly and often loses speed. A wired access point sends traffic back over Ethernet and is usually faster and steadier.
Mesh is simpler but less manual
Mesh systems use one app and automatic node management. Standalone APs take more setup but can be cheaper and more controllable when Ethernet is already installed.
You can use multiple access points
Large homes can use several wired APs, each home-run to the router or switch, all using the same Wi-Fi name for a continuous network.
