How to Find Your Public IP Address

Public IP address shown on router status page

Your public IP address is the address your internet provider assigns to your whole home connection. It is the address websites and remote services see, while your home devices use private addresses such as 192.168.1.5 inside the house.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you need your public IP for port forwarding, remote access, ISP troubleshooting, a game server, or camera access from outside the home.

Find your public IP address

Any of these methods should show the same address when you are connected to the same home network.

  1. Search what is my IP in Google or another search engine. Many show the address at the top of results.
  2. Visit a lookup site such as whatismyip.com or ipchicken.com for the address, ISP name, and rough location.
  3. Log into your router app or admin page and look for WAN IP, Internet IP, or Public IP on the status screen.
  4. Check from another device on the same Wi-Fi if you want confirmation; the public address should match.

More control

You only need it for specific tasks

Most people rarely use a public IP directly. It matters for port forwarding, remote access, support calls, or services hosted from home.

It can change

Unless you pay for a static IP, your public IP can change after a modem restart, power outage, or provider refresh. If remote access suddenly stops working, check whether the address changed.

Dynamic DNS can give you a stable name

A Dynamic DNS service points a fixed hostname to your current public IP and updates when the address changes. That is often cheaper than paying for a static IP.

IP location is approximate

Public IP lookup locations are based on provider records and routing, not GPS. They may be close to your city or far off.
