Signs that point to aging hardware
One symptom is not proof, but several together are meaningful.
- Drops that return soon after every power cycle.
- A router that feels uncomfortably hot to the touch.
- Wi-Fi range that has clearly shrunk without changes to your home layout.
- Speeds far below the plan even right next to the router and after provider checks.
- Lights that flicker, dim, or show ports working intermittently.
Rule out fixable causes first
Do not replace hardware before checking these.
- Check the router admin page for firmware updates.
- Count connected devices; old routers may struggle with smart TVs, phones, plugs, cameras, and laptops all at once.
- Check 2.4 GHz interference from nearby networks, microwaves, baby monitors, and crowded apartments.
- Power-cycle the router for 60 seconds and see whether the fix lasts days or only hours.

A router that no longer receives firmware updates can become a security risk even if it still seems functional.

Look for regular firmware updates, the Wi-Fi standard your devices use, enough ports, enough device capacity, and mesh if range is the real problem.
