
Thermal printing uses heat instead of liquid ink or toner. A thermal print head heats precise spots as paper or label material passes underneath, creating the image without a normal cartridge in the most common designs.

Direct thermal vs thermal transfer
The two technologies sound similar but use different supplies.
- Direct thermal: uses heat-sensitive paper that darkens where the print head touches. It is common for receipts and many shipping labels. No ink, toner, or ribbon is required.
- Thermal transfer: uses a ribbon that melts wax or resin onto label material. It is common for barcode labels, asset tags, and labels that need to last longer.
- Durability: direct thermal prints fade with heat, sunlight, and friction. Thermal transfer prints last longer because the image is deposited from a ribbon.
- Compatibility: direct thermal paper and transfer ribbon are not interchangeable. Buy media made for the printer type.

Scratch test for direct thermal
Scratch a receipt with a fingernail or coin. If it darkens, it is direct thermal paper reacting to heat from friction.
Protect important receipts
Receipts can fade in sunlight, hot cars, wallets, and heat-exposed storage. Photograph or scan important proof of purchase.
Choose by label lifespan
Use direct thermal for shipping and temporary labels. Use thermal transfer for product labels, equipment tags, and labels exposed to handling or weather.
