Duplex printing means printing on both sides of a sheet. One-sided printing is called simplex. Duplex can be automatic, manual, or completely unsupported depending on the printer.

Automatic vs manual duplex
Hardware decides how much work the printer can do itself.
- Automatic duplex: the printer has a built-in duplexer that flips paper internally and prints the second side without your help.
- Manual duplex: the printer prints one side, then the driver prompts you to flip and reload the stack for the other side.
- No duplex support: you must manage page order and flipping yourself without help from the driver.
Binding direction
Long-edge binding flips like a book and is normal for portrait documents. Short-edge binding flips like a notepad and is common for landscape pages or presentations. The wrong choice makes the back side appear upside down.
More control
Some ADFs support duplex scanning
Duplex scanning is separate from duplex printing. It means the document feeder can scan both sides of original pages automatically.
The option can disappear
Drivers often hide duplex for envelopes, labels, glossy paper, heavy paper, unusual sizes, or quality settings that the duplexer cannot safely feed.
Check the spec sheet
Budget printers may mention manual duplex but lack an automatic duplexer. Read the exact wording before buying.
