
DPI means dots per inch. In printing, it describes how many tiny dots of ink or toner the printer can place in one inch. In scanning, it describes how much detail the scanner captures per inch.

Use this if a printer spec sheet, scan setting, or print-quality option mentions DPI and you want to know which number matters for real documents and photos.
What DPI actually changes
Higher DPI can produce finer detail, but only when the source image or document has enough detail to benefit.
- Low DPI or draft settings print faster and use less ink or toner, but fine text and photos may look rough.
- Normal quality is enough for everyday text, homework, and office documents.
- High, Best, or Photo quality uses more dots, takes longer, and can improve photos or detailed graphics.
- A high printer DPI cannot create detail that is missing from a low-resolution image.
DPI vs PPI
Image files are often described by PPI, or pixels per inch. A photo needs enough pixels for the intended print size. Printer DPI controls how the printer lays down dots; image PPI controls how much image information exists.
Scanning DPI
For ordinary documents, 200 to 300 DPI is usually enough. Use 600 DPI or higher for small text, photos you may enlarge, or archival scans where detail matters. Higher scan DPI creates larger files.
More control
Quality settings often hide DPI
Most printer dialogs use labels such as Draft, Normal, Best, or Photo instead of raw DPI numbers. These settings change speed, quality, and ink or toner use.
Match DPI to the job
Max quality for every page wastes time and supplies. Use normal for documents and higher quality for photos or graphics that need it.
