Automatic duplex printing uses a separate path that flips the page and feeds it back through. That path is more sensitive to paper type, driver settings, and small scraps than ordinary one-sided printing.

Use this if two-sided printing is grayed out, prints single-sided, flips the back side upside down, or jams when the printer tries to duplex.
Turn on two-sided printing in the print dialog
Support for duplex is not enough; the job must have the setting enabled.
- Open the print dialog with Ctrl + P or Command + P.
- Look for Print on Both Sides, Two-Sided, or Duplex. Open Preferences, More settings, or Show Details if needed.
- Choose long-edge binding for portrait book-style pages.
- Choose short-edge binding for landscape or notepad-style flipping.
- Print a two-page test before a large job.
Check that the driver knows a duplexer is installed
Use this if the option is missing or grayed out.
- On Windows, open Printers & scanners, select the printer, open Printer properties, and check Device Settings.
- Set Duplex Unit or Installable Options to Installed if the printer physically has one.
- On Mac, open Printers & Scanners, Options & Supplies, and check the Options tab for a duplexer setting.
- If the printer has no automatic duplex hardware, use manual duplex instead.
Fix jams in the duplex path
Use this when duplex starts but jams midway.
- Use plain standard-weight paper; glossy paper, labels, cardstock, and heavy paper often cannot duplex.
- Let laser printers cool before checking near the duplex path and fuser area.
- Remove the rear or bottom duplex unit according to the manual.
- Check for stuck sheets and tiny scraps.
- Reinsert the duplex unit firmly until seated.
More control
Manual duplex is still possible
Many printers without automatic duplex can print odd pages first, then prompt you to flip the stack for even pages.
Duplex settings may reset
Some drivers turn two-sided printing off after each job. Check the setting every time if it appears to stop working.
